Onchocerciasis makes sufferers --usually farmers living in the rural areas near these black-fly laden rivers-- so very weak that they are useless economically and on the farm (before eventually making them blind) and has affected whole villages—wiping out the human population. A World Bank statement on the disease says, "River blindness (Onchocerciasis) is a common disease, in Africa. A parasitic worm that develops in the human body and causes serious skin disease is the cause.It not only engenders blindness but also disfigurement and unbearable itching in its victims. Since it is very discomforting, many farmers who are victims are normally rendered incapable to till large tracks of farmland. It is spread by the blackfly that breeds in fast-flowing rivers. It is estimated that between 10 and 30 percent of its victims consequently become blind. The disease primarily affects African rural communities in 19 African countries in central, eastern and western Africa, which include Angola, Burundi, Kenya, Cameroon,Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.These areas have nearly 100 million people who are at risk of contracting the disease. Of those, about 22 million are infected. Treatment, though available in those days when we were in medical school, took all of 180 days of swallowing drugs daily; non--stop. All of that is the bad news. The good news? Today, Ivermectin, developed by diligent researchers of Merck (Mectizan is a readily available brand) cures Onchocerciasis or river blindness--a single oral dose of ivermectin, taken annually for the 10- to 15-year lifespan of the adult Onchocerca Volvulus worms, is all that is needed to protect the individual from onchocerciasis. So you see, onchocerciasis has no business afflicting anyone any longer-- even if that's what you have. Do you really have Oncho? I do not know and cannot say--but if you visit a dermatologist he will be able to tell you and cure you after testing your skin and blood. You can find a dermatologist at Federal Medical Centres, Teaching and Specialist Hospitals and if you are lucky, a General hospital. Cheers

Pains in the pelvis or lower abdomen, fever, a swelling in the lower abdomen, sweating and irregular menses are some of the symptoms and signs to look for. Also a Pelvic Ultrasound Scan will reveal details of the condition. Any TOA is a matter for surgery by a competent Obsterician-Gynaecologist. Infection of the tubes and ovaries by bacteria are the culprits—germs like Staphylococcus, Streptococci,Diplococcus, Neisseria etc. Pityriasis Versicolor is easily treated with antifungal creams. When we talk blood from the lab/ test/marriage angle, we have to differentiate two different but very important concepts. The first is the genotype --the type of Hemoglobin you have. The second is blood groups--what type of blood is your class or category. The two are different but often --understandably, though, confused for one another. Every human being has blood that belongs to one of four classes or groups A or B or O or AB. By another classification--the Rhesus classification -- all human beings are either Positive or Rhesus Negative. The big significance of grouping is the simple but very true and sobering fact that if you are given blood from another group that is not your own, death is the result. So the most important application of Blood group Serology is that of transfusion--simply find out the correct blood group needed to help some dying, bleeding patient from accident, fractures, operation, delivery or gunshot wound. Before a certain doctor called Carl Landsteiner discovered that humans are pre--grouped into these four groups, attempts to transfuse blood to bleeding victims of war, injury and damage was usually fatal and no one understood why. Until Dr Landsteiner elucidated it around 1900/1901, it was an extremely dangerous thing to have blood transfused--more often than not the patient died. Genotype is another matter entirely. Genotype refers to the type of Hemoglobin that a person carries. Hemoglobin is the dye or pigment that colours the blood red and carries oxygen around the body. Genotype is what you need to ascertain before you marry because the practical application is in heredity. If you are genotype AS, this means your parent 1 gave you An A; the other an S. And you in turn can give either an A or an S to your offspring. If your wife to be is also AS, for example, the same applies as above. Now, if you married and each time you both made a baby, you give that baby your S each, then you will have an SS as a child. Hemoglobin S is variant hemoglobin that easily forces the red blood cell carrying the hemoglobin to assume a sickle--looking shape rather than the biconcave disc that red cells are meant to have. The result of this scenario is anaemia--not enough blood for the victim; early death; suffering before death and so on. That is why it is a good thing for intending couples to go ahead and do the necessary lab tests to determine they are not risking having SS babies. Now back to your question: You both can marry if your genotype and/or faith allow it. So do your genotype before we conclude on the matter. The A+ you mentioned is just Blood Groups--implications for blood transfusion only; not for heredity and the inheritance you are liable to give your children. Cheers

Doing the evil deed is deliberately allowing the devil -- or his evil spirit messengers to gain some measure of access or control over us -- and in the process giving up our own dominion of the earth and its resources and blessings --giving these up for the evils spirits to use against us."He who breaks an hedge" -- he who disobeys God-- "a serpent will bite him". There are physical consequences for promiscuity for example --STD's -- which we all know but the snag is, it does not catch everyone -- giving room for some posturing and maneuvering on the part of disobedient humanity. Good. But I tell you, no one goes scot-free -- spiritually. Do it and sin against both your body -- unwanted pregnancy; STD's --and soul -- guilt and worthlessness feelings and even your spirit-- incubi and succubi. Now, one of the ways this torment comes is what you are facing-- your case would seem simple to the spiritually understanding-- you are already married -- spiritually, that is -- to one of these succubi and she is the one driving off all would be female admirers-- you see they feel you are not interested because -- one way or the other, they sense you are already married. Further proof? You yourself-- at 42 -- have no plans to marry--oh it bothers you a bit -- but just theoretically. Why is this? The simple answer is --why would a married man plan to marry again? Remedy? The best I know is to cast out the evil spirits in the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth - whereupon, I guarantee you, you will marry in no time -- certainly b4 year's end --if you follow instructions. Orthodoxy, truly defined answers back to the first maxim of medicine-- "primum, non nocere" --which translated means, "most importantly, do no harm". If --as I do in my practice -- I pray for you and you get well faster, quicker or better than you could without prayer, the big question is have I done you harm? If instead of planning to help you by costly operation to bring your baby out, I guarantee you and deliver your baby without a C/S, have I harmed you in any way? If I have not, but rather have helped you, then true orthodoxy cannot and does not quarrel with me or anything you do so long as you do not harm the patient and do not add to his woes. What then quarrels with prayer and other beneficial ideas-- that are not even spiritual? You got it -- prejudice; conceit; pride and arrogance-- that's all. Ask Australian Dr. Barry Marshall, current Nobel prize winner for medicine who came up with a new idea -- it is germs (Helicobacter pylori) that cause ulcer -- not acid per se --and treatment should simply be antibiotics. Prejudiced orthodoxy certainly crucified him and almost made him go mad. Today, the same orthodoxy -- but with the prejudice gone --has given him the Nobel prize for medicine. Dear Doctor, I happened to come across your column at a friend's place with whom I am staying presently and I want to say I like the way you advice and re-assure those who write you with their problems.This has encouraged me to write to you.I would like to know if it is possible for someone like me whose parents are not diabetic to have diabetes. Is it possible for a young boy like me who is twenty-one years to have diabetes just like that? What are the symptoms of diabetes? Does it make the male organ small and weak? Why I am asking this is because sometime ago I noticed that after I urinate, some whitish liquid comes out and it draws like okro though it's not quite as thick. It is clear and whitish and doesn't smell badly or cause pain . I thought I had STD at first but I was surprised because I have never slept with any woman before and I don’t masturbate. Last month I summoned courage and went to the hospital and to my greatest surprise I was told that it was semen escaping from my reproductive organs. Now one of my friends has told me that this is a sign of diabetes. Is it true? I am afraid because I know I take a lot of sweet things. Another one of my friends told me that this condition is caused by smallness of my organ. He further advised me to start having sex otherwise it would start growing smaller. Yes diabetes runs in families but there are environmental determinants that can trigger its manifestation even when the genetic disposition is not there. So diabetes can just arise out of "nowhere"--yes. Diabetes does not the cause any of the things you have(although it can cause low libido--disinterest in sex as well as erectile dysfunction or impotence). You say you've not had sex before but what about necking and other such things including genital or oral contact? They are significant in these cases, you know. Do your test but let a doctor order it and it should prove that you don’t have diabetes. Diabetes is not always inherited. It can arise from nowhere. It's major symptoms are frequency of urination,overmuch thirst, tingling sensations in the feet and hands, frequent infections like boils, furuncles and carbuncles, slow healing ulcers,or cuts or wounds, blurred vision, always tired or just no symptom at all.For those with no symptom like you but who want to find out if they could have or be prone to the disease the laboratory may find they have what we call an impaired glucose tolerance when and if they do the test of their glucose tolerance. This your okro like discharge is a sign; not of diabetes but of chronic prostatitis –a disease that is usually a complication; not of an STD( it can be) but of UTI(urinary tract infection) which any one can have whether they sex or not. The genitals, you see, perform three functions: recreation, urination and procreation (reproduction). Now, chronic prostatitis is a very insidious disease and because the prostate is an organ through which all these three functions of the genitals pass, it could cause problems in all the three-- that is the cause of your problem and not diabetes. Anyone who, as a male, discharges any stuff without sexual arousal has chronic prostatitis-full stop. Most young men your age feel that they must have a horse size organ to be men. Not so. It is not quantity in this matter but quality that women consciously or unconsciously look for. If you have a king size organ and lack technique your sex would not be able to satisfy a woman-- never forget that.Also never forget that it is indiscriminate sex that causes problems(HIV,STD,AIDS ), not diabetes. Again, remember that diabetes does not cause these problems that you ask about.Your friend will push you into indiscriminate sex and that's where the trouble will come from; Okay? So beware.Small organs are not the cause of discharge, diabetes or anything; Okay?. Don't buy that notion.It is un-educated; illiterate. Full stop. Diabetes is a disease caused by the body's inability to handle sugar /carbohydrates properly because insulin is deficient or not working. It does not mean that sweet things cause diabetes-- else ask the people of Western cultures who would have been suffering an epidemic of diabetes on account of their liking for sweets at almost every meal--dessert, iced cream, jelly, syrup etc. A correct, balanced and nutritious diet as well as exercise and weight control are the things that help prevent diabetes. False Pregnancy, Blocked Tubes --can I Conceive?

Dear Dr, I have a blocked tube, I have been trying to conceive for the past 2yrs and 6months all to no avail, have read about this false pregnancy I was also a victim, I stopped seeing the woman because she said I came pregnant but I still see my normal period the pregnancy is not growing in any way and she keeps telling me that am my baby is fine. I also take Dexamethasone just to blow me up. Doc, please tell me if this also affects my inability to conceive. Thank you, Ama, Abuja. Dear Ama, You cannot be taking Dexamethasone and expect things to be okay with you as it is a steroidal drug and these drugs are very delicate-- only to be prescribed by doctors- they are not just over -the-counter remedies that anybody can buy and use as they fancy; okay? I do not know that dexamethasone affects a woman’s ability to conceive but wouldn’t be surprised if it does; SO PLEASE STOP IT NOW. Now false pregnancy (pseudocyesis) is another matter. Commonly found with ladies who are too anxious to get pregnant as well as those who are too anxious NOT to get pregnant, the definition is when a woman believes she is pregnant when there is no objective evidence – either the scan or urine tests or blood test--- all are negative; yet the lady still believes she is pregnant, principally because she has a protuberant abdomen, and maybe because she has certain feelings she has associated with pregnancies before that. Certainly this has left the level of the physical and is squarely a matter of the mind, beliefs and perception. This is why I believe anyone can see that a purely physical approach to the management of pseudocyesis is inadequate. The psycho spiritual must be taken into consideration, of course along with the physical so that we have a more thorough and holistic appraisal of the challenge. Now, most medical doctors have no training in or appreciation of matters none physical. Even the psychological which should not be too far from the doctor’s diagnostic tool-kit leaves too many doctors out of their depth; not to talk of the spiritual. But let it be on record that there are cases of this nature who have been dismissed as cranks who have successfully gone on (albeit with serious spiritual intervention such as prayer and deliverance) to have the same babies that had disappeared from the radar screen of science. What should be done about each specific type of Vaginal Discharge has also been discussed and will be found in the same place. A quick re-hash and summary here will do as we consider some 12 causes of vaginal discharge. First you must understand that all women have NORMAL vaginal discharge which is white or milky white like akamu or milk and doesn’t smell and doesn’t itch. When women are ovulating, there’s INCREASED but NORMAL discharge; this also happens during pregnancy –we call this leucorrhea. Need we say that before sex AND after sex vaginal discharge also necessarily increases? Candidiasis causes an over-plenty white and horribly itchy discharge. Trichiomoniasis has a thin frothy discharge; non white maybe gray, greenish or yellow, plentiful and a strong bad smell and a bad itch. Bacterial Vaginosis will cause a very mild itch if any, and plenty smelly (maybe fish-like odour) thin gray discharge that is notorious for appearing especially after intercourse. Chlamydia’s discharge –when there is one -- because 75% of women have no symptoms at all -- is generally not thick but thin, cloudy-white but definitely abnormal and just may smell. There is some itchiness or burning especially with urination. Those are five infections--gonorrhea; candidiasis; trichomoniasis;bacterial vaginosis and chlamydia. Finally, the two conditions -- a foreign body in the vagina – like a forgotten menstrual tampon-- will cause a foul discharge. And after the birth of a baby every mother has a discharge called lochia for at least 6 weeks.
My dear, the only way to find out which of these is afflicting you is to go see a doctor who will carefully listen to you , interview you properly and then order appropriate tests, especially the one called called “High Vaginal Swab” or HVS with microscopy, culture and sensitivity” (m,c,s) which will help to tell what exactly it is and how to treat it. Cerebro-spinal Meningitis or Cerebral Malaria?

Since then I could not walk properly again. Please doctor I felt sick again two months ago and somebody told me that it was cerebral malaria again. You see, Cerebrospinal Meningitis, which is different from Cerebral Malaria is of two types. The one that occurs in epidemic proportions especially in the North of Nigeria caused by the germ referred to as the meningococcus (Neisseria Meningitidis is its scientific name) is the first type. And the none-epidemic type that is common in the South of Nigeria is the second type--caused by the germs Haemophilus influenza and Diplococcus Pneumoniae and many other germs (even Staphylococcus)! Overcrowding, high humidity, prolonged dry season, reduction of mass immunity to a particular strain of the disease, fake or substandard vaccination and unhygienic conditions cause this disease to spread by respiratory droplet infection from carriers that usually have no symptoms. The first type can be prevented by taking the vaccine prepared against this very deadly disease that kills hundreds of hapless folk in the North seasonally. If one has already suffered it once (which is the same as taking the vaccine) he isn't likely to contact it again. So be assured you are safe concerning CSM. Unless, of course you got a fake vaccine as is common in our country and as I mentioned. But as you know, anyone can get malaria at any time and even though malaria tends to affect the extremes of age - little kids and the elderly- as well as pregnant women more severely (and is therefore prone to cause cerebral malaria more easily among them) it can still happen to anyone - including you. That is why, if I were you, I'd take my health more seriously. Because whether the one or the other - Cerebrospinal Meningitis or Cerebral Malaria, any of them can kill so easily; so please don't waste time: waiting two months before appropriately responding to the challenge of the new illness is playing with fire - although, ironically, neither of these two diseases will leave you comfortable enough to be asking questions by mail if you were really struck by them - they strike suddenly and kill (or at least paralyze, blinden, or deafen etc) within days or at most weeks - the correct response is still for you to go see a doctor face to face and have him sort out what the matter is with you. You must understand that hard stools are the leading cause of a dozen or so conditions that can ache your anus; especially if associated with stooling. Other conditions are a)Cuts in the skin or tissues(we call these fissure-in-ano) of the anus --again; dry hard stools cause this, leading to b)infection and maybe c)a boil or d)an abscess. This may end up as d)a "fistula-in-ano" when the pus from the abscess causes a track in the tissues as it tries to find it's way out. e)Injury to the bum as well as e)Anal sex f)Pile or hemorrhoids especially when they are clotted and g)infected; h)STD's and proctalgia fugax,a self limiting condition common among teenagers as well as i)prolapse of the rectum; common among women who have delivered many babies -- ALL can also cause aching anus. It is only after you have seen a good doctor and he has listened to your full description of the problem, cross examined and physically looked you up can anyone say which of these causes you have. They are of two major types--the normal and the abnormal. The first is normal wet dreaming. Again, this normal type has two categories. The first category of normal happens once in a while and is because the system keeps producing millions of sperm cells which are not used up in a male that is not sexually active. Just like a woman menstruates every month when she is not gotten pregnant so also does a man who is not sexually active release an accumulation of sperm cells via wet dreams once in a while. It happens because the man has a disease called Chronic Prostatitis.This wet dreaming is frequent and many times, vivid--the man sees himself actually having sex in the dream and releasing semen as a result. Or he may not really have the sex but just be in preparation to. Chronic Prostatitis has other clinical features -- discharge from the prostate without any sexual stimulation; back ache and or other varieties and types of pain in the pelvis--things moving in the organ; painful penis scrotum, testes; groin; pudendum(underneath the genitals), anus etc etc; sexual inadequacy of all types -- especially premature ejaculation that was not present before; frequency of urination and so on. Again, there may be no symptoms or signs at all. It is diagnosed by carefully seeking germs and an appropriate immune reaction in either the urine and/or the semen or the prostatic fluid -- sometimes after the patient has voided urine. Many germs can cause prostatitis -- some of them are E. Coli; Staphylococccus; Candida; trichomoniasis, viruses--among the non-sexually transmitted ones and gonorrhea and chlamydia among the sexually transmitted. The second type of abnormal wet dreaming, I am afraid, is spiritual more than physical. Here, a man has a sexual encounter with a lady and three or four things begin to happen from the time he had the encounter. a) Sexual Inadequacy of various types descend on him-- premature ejaculation, only one round, weak erection and so on. b)He begins to have wet dreams c)In these wet dreams the particular girl or lady he had the index sexual encounter with becomes very prominent--as in he either begins to see her or her cohorts in the dreams more frequently or the location or elements of his encounter with her continue to plague him either in the dreams or in the mind and d) He often also has a Chronic prostatitis --which may or may not have any symptoms. This category of men usually receive treatment for Chronic Prostatitis over and over again but either never get well or never get well fully or get well now but fall ill later(usually after another bout of this their wet dreaming--but he may not know, poor man!!). They may also notice they have dwindling financial fortunes and difficulty making babies and or progress in other ways. Healed of Cancer

Dear Dr, Early last year, by Barium enema Xray studies, sigmoidoscopy, biopsy and histopathology, I was diagnosed with cancer of the sigmoid colon. The MRI scan showed that the tumor was a macro growth of about 1.5cm. The doctors said the placement of the cancer and its likely spread which they believed had already set in neurosurgeon at the Singapore general hospital said that if I had seen him later, the tumor would ha, accounted for my low back pain, difficulty with stooling, increasing inability to walk and general weakness; that it wasn’t a surprise that by the time I was seeing them in hospital, I needed a wheelchair to get around. I was presented with two options; immediate surgery to remove the tumor [the risk of surgery was that besides a 20% failure rate, I could become totally paralyzed and unable ever to walk again, or medication [I was told that would take a long time to work and most patients only experience a shrinkage in the tumor after a year or so]. What the doctors had found out and said about the tumor was devastating news to me and my family. I remember telling myself that if I were to become totally crippled, I would not want to live anymore. Confused -- Pregnant or Prancing?

Dear Doctor, I feel at home the way you answer people's questions and decided to write you a personal one. I am a 32 year old man married for two years now with no issue to show for it. Our problem now is that of confusion. When my wife and I decided to really start a search for a child, we went for various tests which showed that my wife was alright but with slight fibroid, which the doctors said would not hinder her from conceiving. I was found to have a low sperm count problem and was placed on treatment. This greatly improved to up to 74 million, and was given a clean bill of health as able to impregnate my wife. My wife took in twice and it all went out after the first month. We continued until we decided to try herbs to fight the fibroid. The herb woman told my wife the very first time, that she was one month pregnant. We rejoiced and started thinking of our baby. However lately, she went to hospital for scan after three months, and was told that there was no child in her womb. Meanwhile, her tummy is protruding, breasts enlarging; she feels very heavy, experiences sleepiness and drowsiness in the early mornings, and once or twice has almost thrown up in the morning. The problem is that with all these signs, is it possible that she is not pregnant? And if not, what could be growing in her tummy, since it is not fibroid? This attitude of wanting to give to others always pays in the long run. It is also godly, having originated with Christ who said, "Give and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over shall men give into your bosom; for with what measure ye give shall it be given back unto you". In medical science, your wife is not pregnant but has a condition called Pseudocyesis or false pregnancy which manifests in women who are too anxious to have babies (which is the funny thing about this diagnosis) although it can also occur in women who are too anxious not to have a pregnancy. The important issue is the over anxiety or what we, in psychological medicine, call an anxiety state that is the underlying problem manifesting in bodily symptoms of pregnancy that truly cannot be physically demonstrated by any medical or non medical means. What the medical doctor will usually do is tell the woman she is not pregnant and get her to accept this. The condition resolves after that. The woman's body system comes back to normal. And she now continues to look to God for another pregnancy. Now --and this is the very interesting part-- some health practitioners --- some orthodox, some traditional, others religious --- who solve problems with an understanding of the spiritual basis of human troubles may tell a woman like your wife not to lose heart -- that she is pregnant! They will then go ahead to treat her and, if the appropriate treatment can be followed, can reverse the case to normal-- so that the baby can now be seen by ultrasound, X rays, physical examination etc, and what is more, the woman can now continues her pregnancy normally until delivery and delivers a normal baby in every way. These spiritual practitioners insist the baby was all the time present with the woman but that certain negative forces were responsible for wanting to hide, steal, oppress or kidnap the pregnancy with the possibility of permanent loss or disappearance of the pregnancy if care is not taken! If you ask me what do I believe or what would I tell my patient, I will reply -- "It depends on the patient's belief and her state of mind." If she were the type that has no belief in such things and is more comfortable with a mind-set that denies the spiritual, I would just tell her she has no problem -- that she is not pregnant but has a pseudocyesis – false pregnancy; that's all. If, on the other hand, she can believe or does believe -- then, I tell you nothing is impossible to them that believe!! I would start by impressing her that I really know about these things, having written a book titled "Destroying the Strongholds of Witchcraft and other Human Agents of Satan". I would share with her stories of such cases we have handled in the past. I would admit her and begin to investigate her along the lines of an unstable pregnancy (maybe with lower than normal hormones) while I mount a very strong, severe and strident counter-offensive or attack in the spirit realm through prayers with fasting, deliverance and appropriate intensive follow-up to retrieve, retain, and preserve the pregnancy and make it stable till delivery. Then we shall "Praise the Lord" or "Alhamdulilahi" as the case may be and as we have done, many times before. Cheers

Suppose there was nothing that could give you relief? An asthmatic attack, you must know better than others, is a larger than life study in torment and dehumanisation. Having said that, what you need to do is see a doctor/ internist--doctor specialising in medicine who will listen attentively to you; nexamine you and your complaints and recommend the best way/regime/method to curb and control your attacks. Inhalers are a very great and effective way of both preventing and treating attacks of asthma and the latest technology is to combine a steroid and a beta agonist in an inhaler--its reputed to almost work wonders.Franol or Farenol? Look closely at the small print-- the stuff written on the packaging of the drug in smaller letters than the name of the drug. You'll, very likely, find out that the drugs Franol and Farenol mean exactly the same thing because --as the small print will prove, they contain the very same ingredients -- Ephedrine and Aminophylline. Good Evening Doc, I am 20yrs of age and I had a small rash d@ made a portion of my penis cap to look lighter in colour) 4yrs ago and it has been increasing around my penis cap till now. Please help me Loko Dandy, Damaturu Dear Loko, Here are half a dozen ailments that you have – first you’ve got Candidiasis of the groin – that’s the cause of your sweet itch causing you to feel good whenever you scratch on them. Your genital boils are another diagnosis—the sweat glands and hair follicles are getting superficial infections – anyone who is sexually active and has any boil in the genital should see a doctor quickly. Best doctor to see? A dermatologist/venereologist. Especially as you seem to be getting a vitiliginous rash on you penis—no one can help with that except a good doctor/skin specialist who can properly evaluate it. Vitiligo is a strange skin condition that makes parts of the skin turn pink at random. It is treatable. Ejaculating while stooling, frequent wet dreams and premature (too fast) ejaculation aren’t due to oversensitivity of your penile cap; no. It is plain old Chronic Prostatitis; simple. Scrotal Pain Without Swelling

I pray he will never let you down. .In fact I can't imagine how I feel happy as I see you tackling people's problems and I know that it may be the best way to kick off some related ailment like this nagging scrotal pain out of my system. You see, sudden scrotal pain like you describe can be caused by about 4 or 5 things. The first and most dangerous is Acute torsion of the testis. Unless surgery is done for torsion as soon as possible the likelihood is that the testicle concerned begins to die off--from the torsion which simply means "twisted blood vessels cutting off the blood supply to said testicle". Of course the testicle subsequently dies off-- dwindling gradually in size until it is totally reabsorbed into the body and you cannot feel it again because it has simply disappeared.. The second condition that causes this kind of complaint is an Acute Orchitis. Orchitis means the inflammation of the testicle. This needs no surgery but can be as painful as the first condition. An orchitis is likely more than any of the other conditions to cause a swelling of the testicle. The third and the fourth--Acute or even Chronic Prostatitis and/or Vesiculitis can affect your ejaculation and urination and so are the more likely causes of your own particular condition. All half dozen or so of these conditions can catch anyone --whether they had sex or not. All of them can adversely affect your fertility so you are warned to go look for a urologist/experienced doctor to sort you out today. You simply, at 24, cannot afford any negative affectation of either your fertility or ability.

I Almost Committed Suicide

Dear Dr, Last week i got a knife to cut something i saw in the papers when it suddenly downed on me that the knife i held was a beautiful solution to all my problems. I held it and caressed it long and hard. I ran my finger along the blade and i felt my heart beating fast. I was excited but my joy fled when i thought of what i'd tell my creator if i wasted this life for which Christ has died. I will be 22 next month(God willing) but i have nothing to look forward to.I finished secondary school when i was 15 and got my first admission shortly after i turned 16 and since then i have known no peace. The first time i went to school i was screened out because my o levels were not complete. I failed some basic subjects and some were withheld.I didn't care much because i was young and thought i could afford to lose a year.The next year same thing happened this time the problem was my results coming in late. Then another time when i got a place my uncle said i should join him abroad and continue my school.So i forfeited my admission.If i give you the details it would take all day.I have been prayed for.I have fasted to no man's business.I wrote the present jamb and got 274 points but the school i chose finished their screening and i didn't know about it.As i write to you now, i have been offered various courses ranging from physics,pharmacy,botany,computer science and info tech,travel and tourism and all these things passed me by while i stood and wept.admission season became crying season.I have been through hell and to think i am a girl. most of my friends have finished their first degrees and are planning to get married.This thing has affected all areas of my life.How can i serve God if i keep thinking He is far from me?.when will i finish school and settle down?How can i even love someone when i see myself now as a no good?Won't this push me to accept someone i might not have considered because of my low self esteem. My Many Miscarriages

Good day doctor, My names are Really Frustrated, 29 years old, married, and a resident of Port Harcourt. I thank God for using you for the help of mankind. I got married precisely 25th Feb. 2010 and in July I took in but on the 15th of August that same year I started bleeding. I was placed on primolut for 4 weeks weekly, but on Sept. 15th, a few weeks later, I lost the pregnancy. I resigned as a banker because I was told it was stressful and I joined my husband. A few months later, I took in. By the 5th week, I started bleeding again. I was rushed to the clinic and placed on bed rest and later discharged with a weekly injection of primolut to be taken until it gets to 12 weeks. I took the injection religiously, but on the 19th week I went to urinate and the water wouldn’t stop pouring. I was told the amniotic sac is broken and am not due yet. The gynaecologist told me I had to be cleaned up to avoid infection. Doctor Bibbi, I cried seriously and nearly had a heart attack, but thank God for His Word. Really Frustrated, Port Harcourt Dear Really Frustated, There are physical causes of repeated or habitual (three- in a row) miscarriage; for example, incompetent cervix. There is a professional way to deal with that, and you will need to be checked and examined properly to see you do not have such a condition. There are also psychological/social reasons -- repeated husband battering (God forbid!) is one. Spiritual reasons, though, often neglected; are usually very much involved, too and, in your case would be my serious and important consideration if I were to handle your case. Of course, I would probe and treat all three areas but would evince a high index of suspicion for spiritually inflicted habitual abortion or miscarriage. I’d like to know, for example -- do you have sex in the dreams for example? Do you see red stuff in the dreams? Do you have babies in the dreams? How Palm Oil Fights Cancer

The product of this hard-shell red fruit, harvested primarily on plantations in Southeast Asia, is typically used as cheap cooking oil for fried foods like noodles and curry puffs. Indeed, by the time the palm oil is processed, much of its nutritional value is destroyed. And the fact that it can congeal at room temperature makes it even look extra artery clogging. But curry puffs and clogged arteries are only part of the story. Preliminary research suggests that the form of vitamin E packed into the oil-palm fruit, tocotrienol, could help fight cancer and prevent strokes. Though tocotrienols can be found in rice bran, barley and wheat, palm oil is the richest source of tocotrienol, says Pramod Khosla, an associate professor in the department of nutrition at Wayne State University in Detroit. He says numerous test-tube studies done over the past two decades in the U.S., Canada and Malaysia show tocotrienols are "very effective" in killing cancer cells. Now researchers worldwide are embarking on the critical next step: human clinical trials on cancer patients. "The reason the clinical trials are being done is because the preliminary findings are so promising," Khosla says. The payoff from these trials could be big: using a natural food-based compound to prevent or treat cancer and stroke. "The advantage of food compounds is they are natural and safe," says Arthur Ling, CEO of Davos Life Science, a Singapore-based biomedical firm. "They can be part of your daily diet." (PHOTOS: A Photographer's Intimate Account of Her Mother's Cancer Ordeal) Unsurprisingly, most of the research on the biomedical promise of palm oil is being done in Southeast Asia, where the product is grown. Davos Life Science, which is owned by Kuala Lumpur Kepong, one of the largest oil-palm plantation companies in Malaysia, is a leader in the field of harvesting tocotrienol from palm oil. By steaming the oil-palm fruit at high temperatures, its embedded oil leaks out. The nine-year-old Davos Life then extracts tocotrienols from this distilled vitamin-rich liquid. This, in turn, forms the raw material from which supplements are produced. A good way for tocotrienols to be absorbed in the body, researchers say, is through high-dosage health supplements. This June, Davos Life will embark on a human clinical trial involving late-stage prostate-cancer patients at a research hospital in Kuala Lumpur. Over an initial phase of about six months, cancer patients will be administered high levels of tocotrienols under close medical supervision. Davos Life's hope is that by establishing a stronger link between tocotrienols and cancer therapy, even those not suffering from the disease will be encouraged to increase their intake of tocotrienols by either swallowing it through a pill or adding it to processed foods. "If we can show the health benefits of tocotrienol, one can create an additive from it the way it's been done with fish oil," says Ling. "That could be a huge market." The comparison to fish oil, whose cholesterol-lowering omega-3 fatty acids have exploded into a multibillion-dollar food-additive industry, may be more hopeful than realistic. Like fish oil, palm oil contains natural ingredients that are good for you, "but at much lower levels than fish oil," cautions Khosla of Wayne State University. Nor can palm oil be easily swallowed in its raw and red-colored form, the way fish oil can be eaten through fish. "The taste is bitter," according to M.R. Chandran, a retired Kuala Lumpur–based palm-oil-industry executive. The more appropriate comparison, Khosla says, is to olive oil. Like olive oil, raw palm oil comes from a fruit and contains roughly the same amounts of beneficial properties. Nascent though it may be, the promise of tocotrienols in the fight against cancer is gathering force worldwide. So far, much of the research has been preliminary, restricted largely to test tubes in labs, but ongoing human clinical trials are being conducted not only by smaller Southeast Asian outfits like Davos Life but also by scientists at Ohio State University (on stroke prevention). There are more cancer-specific clinical trials being carried out by researchers at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Whatever the results of these trials are — analysts and researchers caution that it may take years to achieve a decisive breakthrough — the much derided nutritional image of palm oil is certain to improve. Air-Conditioning Allergy?

Dear Dr, I (my nose that is) seem to have gradually developed allergy to air-conditioned atmospheres. I used to suffer perpetually from catarrh and cough until I narrowed the culprit down to my obsession for air-conditioning. I learnt to take it easy by regulating and avoiding direct blowing. But these days, my nose cannot withstand any air-conditioning at all. I’d be sweating and my body craving air-conditioning but I dare not put on the air conditioner in my office or car or house. I cannot go into anywhere there is air-conditioning. I now avoid attending meetings because of this and if I must, I inconvenience others by requesting that the air conditioning be put off. It has been like this now for several months. Surely you must have something to recommend to make my nose not painful in air conditioning? Thanks. Sweating Sammy, Surulere, Lagos Dear Sammy, We need help here -- allergy is a very likely yes but I must confess that you‘ll need to see an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon who will be able to properly and thoroughly examine you to look for any abnormality in your nose. But you seem to narrow it all down to the nose when, obviously, you --nor anyone else for that matter-- sweats through the nose!!! Why do you sweat so? That is beyond a surgeon and would need an astute physician to elucidate. A good guess, with what you complain of is this – considering especially your stated craving of air-conditioning -- do you, like, have a fever-- maybe a Chronic sub-acute fever? This could also be the cause of your excessive sweating, although one would expect sweating to stop with air- conditioning. The least you can do is present yourself to a good physician for a thorough examination of your body, blood, mind and beyond to find what is amiss, okay? Could there be something extra-ordinary happening? -- does someone want your seat at work or is someone out to demote you? All of these must be thoroughly explored. Step over to see a good clinician. Doctor, I love reading your column each time I have the opportunity of coming across Daily Sun. I actually like the way you answer other people problems. I have this problem bothering my mind. I know almost every thing concerning reproductive health 'because I went for course on it sometime in 1998.My problem now is that know when I’m ovulating also know which of the ovaries is bringing out the egg because I use to have a sharp pain on the side that the egg is coming out. The pain then doesn't use to be painful as it is now, the pain come now as if I’m having menstrual cramps but if I make love with my boyfriend 2days before my ovulation, there won't be any pains and I will still know when I'm ovulating. Making love at this time I know it's dangerous. What can I do to reduce this pain apart from making love? If I don't make love with my boyfriend 2days before my menses I always have serious cramps. But if I do make love, though there will be cramps, but not too painful. I use to take contraceptive Postinor 2tm precisely but I took it on the 8th day of menstrual cycle sometime last year but instead of ovulating on the 14th day(I have 28days cycle)I started bleeding and it came for 5days like my normal menses does and I still menstruate on the 28th day which is my normal. Could there have been a problem then? You see Nigerian women are Champion contraception avoiders even though they are knowledgeable about it--many surveys have shown this worrisome fact. Your post-sex contraceptive is the cause of the bleeding --nothing wrong. This drug may act this way in some people. Not to worry. Yes sex at the point in question is too dangerous as pre-sex contraception is better than post sex. So for prevention, use either plain old condoms or spermicidal tablets--insert in place just before sex or take the 3monthly injections. For pain Hyoscine tablets will do very wonderfully and it's important you get this point well because it is the cause of your having compulsory sex around ovulation--the best recipe for unwanted babies. FNC, Oron Dear FNC, We are considering two different systems of characterizing humans by their blood. You see before 1900, whenever doctors tried to transfuse dying, wounded soldiers with blood donated by others, they discovered that the transfusions, rather than save the poor hapless soldiers, actually accelerated their downhill slide into death. They never understood this until a certain Dr Carl Landsteiner made his landmark discoveries that humans belonged to 4 differing blood groups which he named group A, B,AB and O and that blood from these differing groups if mixed together will mutually destroy each other but if you first found out the blood group and then gave the patient blood from that same group, there would be no destruction and the recipients would generally survive and not die. This is the origin and reason behind finding out blood groups and cross matching blood to be donated with the recipient's blood before transfusing them. Blood group O( about 42% of humans) can donate to any of the other groups but can receive only blood group O. The other blood groups must take blood only from members of their group-- after first cross matching it. So blood groups have practical application in blood transfusion--as in when a pregnant woman needs blood after severe blood loss at delivery; for operations; for bleeding gun-shot soldiers etc, etc. Blood genotype is another kettle of fish. Its practical application is in inheritance or non inheritance of the sickle cell disease, sufferers of which disease have the blood genotype SS. You see, blood consists of cells --red blood cells and the liquid part called serum. The red blood cells carry inside them a certain dye that helps to catch and transport oxygen from the lungs into the cells of the body for use in the body as fuel to power the human body machine or engine. This dye is called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin can be of 4/5 types mainly. Type A, B-Thalassemia, S, C, F. F is Fetal hemoglobin--only newborn babies carry this type of hemoglobin; okay? Normal adult hemoglobin is A. S is sick hemoglobin, sicker than C. Now among blacks these sick hemoglobin’s are more rampant than among whites. The Mediterranean peoples have B-Thalassemia as their own sick hemoglobin. Note, most people have the normal hemoglobin -- only a few have the sick thing. And every human being has 2 half parts making up his/he total hemoglobin picture. Each half is given by one of the parents of that person. When each person is to be born, their parents (unknowingly) through their sex cells or gametes-- that is egg cell or sperm cells submit; each, a type of hemoglobin for the child to be born. Suppose one of your parents gave you A and the other A. You would be AA. That's what happened in your case. Now your wife to be, one parent gave her C; the other S. So she is SC. When you have kids they will be either AS, or AC or AS or AC. SS is the problem-- it is a very deadly disease and makes the sufferer a misery, not only to themselves but to their parents and relatives who would have to care for them all the times they fall seriously sick. They generally die early; too. SB--Thalassemia (S-BThal) is also problematic. AS causes no problem; AC too; SC only causes some minor problems when a patient is pregnant. For you and your fiance like I said above, your getting married and having babies is not at all hazardous. Cheers

What to do? Take breakfast early --That's all. Very simple, isn't it? And if you simply can't get breakfast at the correct time, take snacks. Such as: 1.Cooked eggs, 2. Cucumber 3. Cooked ground nuts 4.Some milk --dry or "wet". 5. Garden eggs 6.Roasted yam or plantain 7.Walnuts. All these are foods that help stop acidic digestive fluids (looking for food to digest in your stomach and finding none since you refused to eat breakfast or eat early), digesting the lining and walls of your stomach as a substitute--which is one of the commonest things that fuel ulcers

Sorry for your plight; but it is as clear as day that what you suffer is epilepsy; full stop. The features you describe above are too classical
and typical of "grand mal" epilepsy for anybody to miss. Epilepsy can be treated treated and stopped; so do not give up hope; okay? It is also not contagious, so no one is in danger of catching it from you.However, it can kill — suppose you get an attack while driving or in the bath or in the house all alone? That is why you must secure your life and future by getting treated. Neurologists are the professionals to see. Get a doctor to refer you to one in the Teaching Hospital. Best of luck.

I went to the lab some years back; they told me that I've Staph; which I then treated in a hospital. Staph, the Truth and You (STAPHYLOCOCCUS AWARENESS
CAMPAIGN)
Staphylococcus aureus is a most intriguing subject in Nigeria’s health
scene
of today and it really is high time a lot of misconceptions were set
right
about it.
1 Staphylococcus aureus is not a disease. It is a bacterial germ whose
significance and importance has been blown way out of all proportions
by a
most unfortunate media hype stoked by professional incompetence on more
than
a single front.
2 Staphylococcus aureus lives peaceably, under normal conditions on the
skin
of all human beings, causing no disease, no trouble, no hassles. We
refer to
such germs as commensals.
3 But under certain conditions, certain strains of this bacterial germ
(whose ‘brothers” in the family include Staphylococcus albus,
Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus etc and some
of
whose cousins in the extended family of Gram positive bacterial germs
are
Streptococcus viridians, Streptococcus pneumonia and so on), begin to
cause
disease-now referred to as pathogens.
4 Some of the significant disease conditions that these disease-causing
strains of Staphylococcus aureus cause are:
a) Boils, furuncles and abscesses
b) Bacterial endocarditis (infection of the inner lining of the heart
valves)
c) Bacterial (staphylococcal) food poisoning
d) Staphylococcal pneumonia (lungs)
e) Staphylococcal meningitis (brain)
f) Urinary tract infection (staphylococcal)
g) Chronic prostatitis. The prostate is an organ found only in males, located in front of the rectum or stool store-house
h)Staphylococcal Osteomyelitis--infection of the bone marrow
5 Staphylococcus does not cause any sexually transmitted disease at
all, but
as a urinary tract infection causing germ (the urine pipe passes
through the
middle of the penis for example) that also affects the prostate (which
is an
organ in the male that produces the greater proportion or the fluid
part of
semen) it can easily be confused as an STD
6 The job and vocation of the Western trained (orthodox) medical
establishment is to track down the natural history of diseases (like we
did
for malaria, polio, TB, etc) and to eradicate it (like we did polio,
small
pox, yaws) in the most truthful, transferable and sustainable manner
and I
most solemnly aver that although I cannot disclose names just like that
(the
drugs are strong medications) we in Western medical science know all
about
Staphylococcus and have at least a dozen good drugs that can totally
cure it
if used correctly.
7 The fact that a medical laboratory technologist carries out a test
(microscopy, culture and sensitivity) on your urine or swab specimen
and
discovers or grows Staphylococcus does not mean that you should abandon
the
doctor for any other professional to treat your Staph. Only doctors are
trained and licensed to treat; any other professional is not. Herbalists? Well nothing is impossible but be warned, be careful and beware!!!
8 Even among doctors, you need the highly experienced and knowledgeable
to
successfully treat Staphylococcus where and when it is causing disease.
9 This is because Staphylococcus is a times in itself a very tough germ to
treat and
Chronic prostatitis which it causes (Staph or any germ in your semen or a slimy
fluid
out of your penis without sexual arousal) is an even tougher one. Many
times
UTI treated and cured is re- introduced into the patient from the
patient’s
own prostrate in the case of prostatitis!!
10 In summary, let me highlight some of the reasons why a lot of people
have
problems with Staphylococcus. Usually it is a misdiagnosis of
contamination
-- lab specimens taken for tests are usually not correctly done, so
that
Staphylococcus, which lives on the skin and mucous membranes or inner lining of body cavities, contaminates the specimens and
a
misdiagnosis of Staph is entertained through this error.
11 Again, many people who engage in illicit sex have a psychological
(mindset) of guilt or a guilt complex and this guilt (from the mind)
translates into many symptoms (of the body) like internal heat, things
moving all over the body which are not Staphylococcus at all but part of
the
condition known as Post STD syndrome or guilt--complex following
illegal sex
which fortunately can also be treated by use of appropriate
“psychologies”
and drugs. This is the field of psychosomatic medicine (mind affecting
body) necessitating counseling and mentoring.
12 Many others have other problems with other germs like Chlamydia which
is a “silent” STD and which many doctors overlook, miss and cannot
diagnose it
and begin to treat Staphylococcus instead of what we know in medical
circles
as “Non Gonorrheal Urethritis”(NGU). Candida, E. Coli and other germs
-- all can cause prostatitis
13 Again, even when Staphylococcus is the cause of UTI or prostatitis,
because of the tough nature of the germ and the tricky nature of the
disease, treatment (even when drugs that can cure Staphylococcus are
used)
is not usually adequately prescribed because of the inexperience of the
medical practitioner.
14 Apart from physical problems such as UTI, prostatitis etc, and
problems
of the mind -(see no 11) there are, also, sometimes problems that are
of a
higher or deeper and different dimension than the ordinary. That is the
truth. Even then, with such extraordinary and out of the ordinary
problems
also (maybe spiritual), we are very comfortable --- we have tackled them
successfully for many. You see we are pastors too.
15 If, when you find an experienced doctor or urologist or us, you
listen to
what you are told, follow instructions and use your drugs and
injections
religiously, (unfortunately these conditions are too serious to be
treated
over the counter or over the post - we must see face to face---see last item below for my address--), there is
absolutely no reason under heaven for your Staphylococcus problem not
to
resolve and resolve totally.
