Blood Groups and Genotype

Dear Doctor, Please my fiancee has SC as her genotype and O as her blood group but mine is AA as genotype and B as blood group. I would like to know the side effect of this combination and everything that I need to know about the genotype. Thanks. FNC, Oron Dear FNC, We are considering two different systems of characterizing humans by their blood. You see before 1900, whenever doctors tried to transfuse dying, wounded soldiers with blood donated by others, they discovered that the transfusions, rather than save the poor hapless soldiers, actually accelerated their downhill slide into death. They never understood this until a certain Dr Carl Landsteiner made his landmark discoveries that humans belonged to 4 differing blood groups which he named group A, B,AB and O and that blood from these differing groups if mixed together will mutually destroy each other but if you first found out the blood group and then gave the patient blood from that same group, there would be no destruction and the recipients would generally survive and not die. This is the origin and reason behind finding out blood groups and cross matching blood to be donated with the recipient's blood before transfusing them. Blood group O( about 42% of humans) can donate to any of the other groups but can receive only blood group O. The other blood groups must take blood only from members of their group-- after first cross matching it. So blood groups have practical application in blood transfusion--as in when a pregnant woman needs blood after severe blood loss at delivery; for operations; for bleeding gun-shot soldiers etc, etc. Blood genotype is another kettle of fish. Its practical application is in inheritance or non inheritance of the sickle cell disease, sufferers of which disease have the blood genotype SS. You see, blood consists of cells --red blood cells and the liquid part called serum. The red blood cells carry inside them a certain dye that helps to catch and transport oxygen from the lungs into the cells of the body for use in the body as fuel to power the human body machine or engine. This dye is called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin can be of 4/5 types mainly. Type A, B-Thalassemia, S, C, F. F is Fetal hemoglobin--only newborn babies carry this type of hemoglobin; okay? Normal adult hemoglobin is A. S is sick hemoglobin, sicker than C. Now among blacks these sick hemoglobin’s are more rampant than among whites. The Mediterranean peoples have B-Thalassemia as their own sick hemoglobin. Note, most people have the normal hemoglobin -- only a few have the sick thing. And every human being has 2 half parts making up his/he total hemoglobin picture. Each half is given by one of the parents of that person. When each person is to be born, their parents (unknowingly) through their sex cells or gametes-- that is egg cell or sperm cells submit; each, a type of hemoglobin for the child to be born. Suppose one of your parents gave you A and the other A. You would be AA. That's what happened in your case. Now your wife to be, one parent gave her C; the other S. So she is SC. When you have kids they will be either AS, or AC or AS or AC. SS is the problem-- it is a very deadly disease and makes the sufferer a misery, not only to themselves but to their parents and relatives who would have to care for them all the times they fall seriously sick. They generally die early; too. SB--Thalassemia (S-BThal) is also problematic. AS causes no problem; AC too; SC only causes some minor problems when a patient is pregnant. For you and your fiance like I said above, your getting married and having babies is not at all hazardous. Cheers

Belly Bites—Ulcer?

Dear Sir,
Your column in Daily Sun is superb. Keep it up. Please Sir, I noticed that after eating especially if I don't take my breakfast early, I start having stomach pains as if something is biting and squeezing my intestines. I don't know if I should take worm medicine, but it's every three months I take it and I'm not yet due. What do I do? Thanks,
Irma Ninven, Makurdi
Dear Irma,
What to do? Take breakfast early --That's all. Very simple, isn't it? And if you simply can't get breakfast at the correct time, take snacks. Such as: 1.Cooked eggs, 2. Cucumber 3. Cooked ground nuts 4.Some milk --dry or "wet". 5. Garden eggs 6.Roasted yam or plantain 7.Walnuts. All these are foods that help stop acidic digestive fluids (looking for food to digest in your stomach and finding none since you refused to eat breakfast or eat early), digesting the lining and walls of your stomach as a substitute--which is one of the commonest things that fuel ulcers

Unknown Disease; Help

Dear Doctor,

I have been suffering for a particular kind of sickness for close to two years now. The signs are:I will start shaking, twisting my hands, legs and be struggling. I will be biting my mouth and get the inner part of my mouth injured. People around always hold me. I will also become unconscious. It only happens to me while sleeping. I am a female by gender. Please help me out for I do not know the name of the sickness for it is strange to me – and to my parents, also. Thanks,

Dekija Peters; Yola, Adamawa

Dear Dekija,

Sorry for your plight; but it is as clear as day that what you suffer is epilepsy; full stop. The features you describe above are too classical
and typical of "grand mal" epilepsy for anybody to miss. Epilepsy can be treated treated and stopped; so do not give up hope; okay? It is also not contagious, so no one is in danger of catching it from you. However, it can kill — suppose you get an attack while driving or in the bath or in the house all alone? That is why you must secure your life and future by getting treated. Neurologists are the professionals to see. Get a doctor to refer you to one in the Teaching Hospital. Best of luck.

Cheers

Staph, the Truth and You (STAPHYLOCOCCUS AWARENESS
CAMPAIGN)
Staphylococcus aureus is a most intriguing subject in Nigeria’s health
scene
of today and it really is high time a lot of misconceptions were set
right
about it.
1 Staphylococcus aureus is not a disease. It is a bacterial germ whose
significance and importance has been blown way out of all proportions
by a
most unfortunate media hype stoked by professional incompetence on more
than
a single front.
2 Staphylococcus aureus lives peaceably, under normal conditions on the
skin
of all human beings, causing no disease, no trouble, no hassles. We
refer to
such germs as commensals.
3 But under certain conditions, certain strains of this bacterial germ
(whose ‘brothers” in the family include Staphylococcus albus,
Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus etc and some
of
whose cousins in the extended family of Gram positive bacterial germs
are
Streptococcus viridians, Streptococcus pneumonia and so on), begin to
cause
disease-now referred to as pathogens.
4 Some of the significant disease conditions that these disease-causing
strains of Staphylococcus aureus cause are:
a) Boils, furuncles and abscesses
b) Bacterial endocarditis (infection of the inner lining of the heart
valves)
c) Bacterial (staphylococcal) food poisoning
d) Staphylococcal pneumonia (lungs)
e) Staphylococcal meningitis (brain)
f) Urinary tract infection (staphylococcal)
g) Chronic prostatitis. The prostate is an organ found only in males, located in front of the rectum or stool store-house
h)Staphylococcal Osteomyelitis--infection of the bone marrow
5 Staphylococcus does not cause any sexually transmitted disease at
all, but
as a urinary tract infection causing germ (the urine pipe passes
through the
middle of the penis for example) that also affects the prostate (which
is an
organ in the male that produces the greater proportion or the fluid
part of
semen) it can easily be confused as an STD
6 The job and vocation of the Western trained (orthodox) medical
establishment is to track down the natural history of diseases (like we
did
for malaria, polio, TB, etc) and to eradicate it (like we did polio,
small
pox, yaws) in the most truthful, transferable and sustainable manner
and I
most solemnly aver that although I cannot disclose names just like that
(the
drugs are strong medications) we in Western medical science know all
about
Staphylococcus and have at least a dozen good drugs that can totally
cure it
if used correctly.
7 The fact that a medical laboratory technologist carries out a test
(microscopy, culture and sensitivity) on your urine or swab specimen
and
discovers or grows Staphylococcus does not mean that you should abandon
the
doctor for any other professional to treat your Staph. Only doctors are
trained and licensed to treat; any other professional is not. Herbalists? Well nothing is impossible but be warned, be careful and beware!!!
8 Even among doctors, you need the highly experienced and knowledgeable
to
successfully treat Staphylococcus where and when it is causing disease.
9 This is because Staphylococcus is a times in itself a very tough germ to
treat and
Chronic prostatitis which it causes (Staph or any germ in your semen or a slimy
fluid
out of your penis without sexual arousal) is an even tougher one. Many
times
UTI treated and cured is re- introduced into the patient from the
patient’s
own prostrate in the case of prostatitis!!
10 In summary, let me highlight some of the reasons why a lot of people
have
problems with Staphylococcus. Usually it is a misdiagnosis of
contamination
-- lab specimens taken for tests are usually not correctly done, so
that
Staphylococcus, which lives on the skin and mucous membranes or inner lining of body cavities, contaminates the specimens and
a
misdiagnosis of Staph is entertained through this error.
11 Again, many people who engage in illicit sex have a psychological
(mindset) of guilt or a guilt complex and this guilt (from the mind)
translates into many symptoms (of the body) like internal heat, things
moving all over the body which are not Staphylococcus at all but part of
the
condition known as Post STD syndrome or guilt--complex following
illegal sex
which fortunately can also be treated by use of appropriate
“psychologies”
and drugs. This is the field of psychosomatic medicine (mind affecting
body) necessitating counseling and mentoring.
12 Many others have other problems with other germs like Chlamydia which
is a “silent” STD and which many doctors overlook, miss and cannot
diagnose it
and begin to treat Staphylococcus instead of what we know in medical
circles
as “Non Gonorrheal Urethritis”(NGU). Candida, E. Coli and other germs
-- all can cause prostatitis
13 Again, even when Staphylococcus is the cause of UTI or prostatitis,
because of the tough nature of the germ and the tricky nature of the
disease, treatment (even when drugs that can cure Staphylococcus are
used)
is not usually adequately prescribed because of the inexperience of the
medical practitioner.
14 Apart from physical problems such as UTI, prostatitis etc, and
problems
of the mind -(see no 11) there are, also, sometimes problems that are
of a
higher or deeper and different dimension than the ordinary. That is the
truth. Even then, with such extraordinary and out of the ordinary
problems
also (maybe spiritual), we are very comfortable --- we have tackled them
successfully for many. You see we are pastors too.
15 If, when you find an experienced doctor or urologist or us, you
listen to
what you are told, follow instructions and use your drugs and
injections
religiously, (unfortunately these conditions are too serious to be
treated
over the counter or over the post - we must see face to face---see last item below for my address--), there is
absolutely no reason under heaven for your Staphylococcus problem not
to
resolve and resolve totally.
And that’s a guarantee!!!
Cheers.

P S
Staph as the cause of prostatitis is a tall order for any doctor -- see
4g
and 9 above -- but can be cured --we have done it b4 and will show you
proof
when we see
Particularly and especially in these prostatitis cases (as caused by
any
germ --not Staph alone -- you have complications such as
a) Low sperm count
b)Azoospemia--zero sperm count
c)Sexual Inadequacy of any and every type-- premature ejaculation, no
libido, only one round, pain with sex, weak erection, failing erection,
no
erection, waist pain, low back pain, pain in the genitals, frequent wet dreams, nocturnal
emissions)etc
You'll understand better when we settle down

WEIGHT REDUCTION PROBLEMS

WEIGHT REDUCTION PROBLEMS

Dear Doctor,

I'm a favourite and admirer of your column in the Sun on Tuesday

However, can you please proffer answers to these questions of
mine:

* Does Cold water add to one’s body weight and fatness?
* How can one necessary shed weight if it has been a family
identity/hereditary?
* Does beer, soft drink and junk food adds to fatness?
* Apart from body exercise, what other ways can one use in
reducing fatness?
* What drug(s) can one use to combat this, if any? With little or
no side effects.

Thank you,

Franklyn Nagogo, Katsina-Ala

Dear Franklyn,

Cold water does not cause weight gain. Just forget the notion—there’s absolutely no physiological or medical connection between taking or bathing with cold water and getting fat. No way. Just forget it.

To loose weight follow the pieces of advice below:

I'll mention 7 briefly 1. Exercise 2. Starvation 3.Dieting 4.Obesity Surgery--the most effective of the lot because it takes care of the real reason for obesity which is over-eating by cutting off a good portion of the patient's stomach so that even after the intervention(surgery) they do not go back to their overeating 5. Slimming teas, herbs and other alternative methods 6. Amphetamines which are medicinal agents to suppress appetite (beware--they can cause addiction) 7. A new anti-obesity drug by a leading Pharmaceutical company that's really effective, too. The drug is a prescription drug so I will not be able to give you the name but I’m sure you can ask at a pharmacist’s.

You must also understand that there are two major things that control a person’s weight. These are Nature and Nurture. Family inheritance, constitution, body build and one’s God given endowment which we sum up as Nature take a whopping 80 per cent of the final results. The things I mention above can help with Nurture—just about 20 per cent. The approach of obesity surgery above is to combine an attack on both Nature (the craving some people have for food which is natural to them) and Nurture (helps reduce food intake –"starvation" of sorts. This surgery is available in Nigeria and can work wonders for you if you require it. It is also true that there are many food-additives or medicinals and herbal preparations that can permanently reduce your weight. Bottom line? Yes, permanent weight reduction for anybody is now possible. Just call the help lines

Why I Dodge Marriage!!

Dear Doctor,
I thank you very much for the immeasurable work you are doing in the life of countless number of people out there. It is note-worthy to say more grease to your elbows. Sir, for precisely twenty years now, I have been plagued with a life threatening disease called Staphylococcus. The genesis of my problem could be traced to when I was in secondary school when I started feeling pains in my lower abdomen. This took me to the General Hospital in Oyo township where I was told by the doctor after carried out a test on my urine sample that I had blood stain in my urine and as such I contacted schistosomiasis and a drug-- niridazole (ambilhar) was prescribed for me. Subsequent development after this was the movement of worm like creature in my penis that later developed to involve my scrotal sac. Presently I am forty-two years of age, but I can say to you that I remain in life till today just by the grace of almighty Allah and partly as a result of combination of drugs both orthodox and traditional. The latest of my medical tests was carried out at General Hospital Ikeja roughly four years back. The doctor asked me to do a full semen analysis. After the test, a drug -- Tarivid or ofloxacin was prescribed for me which I used accordingly. I got partial relief from the use of the drug. After sometime I still experience the wormlike movement in my manhood and in the scrotal sac. This has became mind-boggling to me because the movement within the penis is more to the base of the body and much more within the scrotal sac; making me squeeze them at the instance I feel the movement within and funny enough, this problem has led to great reduction in the size of my penis and even to weak erection. I am no longer bothered about the problem of low sperm count! This, I am sure, would have set in long before now as a result of this problem. All of this has been making me to dodge the issue of marriage for sometimes now. Please doctor what can I do to have this problem solved once and for all and to be free totally from this scratching and squeezing of organs? I did read, a long time ago from your contribution in the newspaper that Staph can be treated with a regular doses of drugs for a long period of time and that it cannot stop one from having a child and neither does it kill organs. I am finding this belief to be contrary in my case because my organ is dying and much more is the reduction in size that does not justify my age. Please sir I need your help. I am dying internally. Hoping to read from you as soonest. Thanking you for your anticipated co-operation.
Anonymous Agege, Lagos

Dear Anon
Your symptoms and signs are so characteristic -- even the complication-- in this case unmarried or delayed marriage at 42 !! You have a Chronic Prostatitis (CPR) problem-- with some Somatisation symptoms. The Somatisation Syndrome --- is very common with sufferers of CPR. Somatisation (soma = body in Greek) You see, whenever anybody has problems with their manhood they become seriously anxious - -and extreme anxiety-- a times suppressed and unrecognized by the gentleman-- begins to manifest as bodily symptoms -- things moving and crawling; ants and so on --in the body although the origin of the problem is not the body or anything physical but from the mind -- from the challenge and its emotional reaction. Cure is possible but by face to face consultation with someone who knows and is sure of themselves and what they are into-- not by e mail. I do hope you understand. CPR can be caused by any germ, but Staphylococcus aureus is specially becoming a notorious cause. Send to staphdoctor@yahoo.com for free and fuller details and information on how to avail yourself of a cure and get rid of the challenge so as to advance in life -- I mean, at least get married. Diminishing penile size? Another pointer to prostate problems or hypogonadism. We'll cure it.

Am I Going Mad?

Doctor Sir,

I am in a desperate need of a solution to this problem. I am a secondary school leaver, right from my secondary schooldays I have been experiencing this problem. The problem is this, whenever I talk to a person, address a congregation or had an encounter with somebody, I am always nervous and after that i cannot write as a result of the nervousness. Last year I visited a doctor and he told me that it is palpitation that it will stop soon but I have been waiting patiently for it to stop but to no avail. I am not comfortable with this, so I need a way out of this mess. Doctor, I hope I'm not going mad or something?
Please reply via my e-mail because as a secondary school leaver I may not be opportune to read it.
Gabe; Gokana; Rivers

Dear Gabe;

Such nerves as you complain of usually have a discernible origin which a skilled doctor/psychologist/psychotherapist//psychiatrist can help you ferret out. These roots/origins are usually some conflict or the other at the base of your mind or emotions. Any hidden worries or anxieties or guilt or tension? These are the kinds of questions he will be looking for answers to.
Then he can tackle it. The condition is referred to as an anxiety neurosis, almost bordering on a phobia.
What to do? Go seek out a professional who understands the mind-- like the ones above. Where to find them? Try General Hospitals, Specialist Hospitals; Teaching Hospitals. You can be treated. Help is available.
Madness? Oh no!! Truly, when we talk mind and psychiatry, most people think madness. Psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists are not always treating madness; okay? There are much simpler, milder and harmless problems of the mind called Neuroses that we all can suffer from -- like Depression-- and they are really skilled in helping out with such concerns. Madness is another kettle of tea and I daresay your fears must be properly laid to rest by telling you what are the tell-tale features of madness-- which you do not have but which I list here just to help anyone with fears similar to yours to sort themselves out. When a person is going mad you begin to notice other symptoms apart from the ones you mentioned --things that affect the person's character especially; character changes —like a)Coldness vs Normal Warmth; b)Concern Gone; c)May hear voices; d)Sleeplessness; e)Mannerisms and habits have changed--won't do some things they are normally very fond of; f)Violence; g)May see things others do not see; h)Mood changes -- may be too joyful or too depressed for normal ;i)Withdrawal) j)Verbal Attacks and negative words and curses on people ;k)Wanting to undress in public; l)Hallucinations ;m)Jumpiness and fear; n)Aggressiveness; o)Incorrigibility; p)Irritability--
q)Fights Easily; r)Paranoia -- or a feeling; frequently expressed-- that normally harmless things or people want to harm the patient; s)Quarrelsomeness-- Quarrels with everyone and everything -- fights her relatives; attacks driver; uses a knife or other harmful instruments to threaten; suddenly tears other's clothing; t)Denial of reality; u)Anger; v)Wrath -- as in great anger; w)Violence; and so on.
All of that is bad news. The good news, of course, is that even all these can be controlled and suppressed. And you'd better believe me -- at whatever level -- whether just beginning or the one that has progressed a little bit; there is no madness that modern medicine cannot put under control. Just see the right professionals.

Cheers

Bad Mouth Odour

Bad Mouth Odour

Dear Doctor,
I have been reading you, and you are doing a good job by enlightening the
reader's mind. Well I want you to know what is mouth odour, the cause and
what to do to correct it. Reply me via e mail

Thank you,
HNL, Lokoja

Dear HNL,

We refer to bad mouth odour as halitosis and it can be caused by myriad
problems. Let me list at least a dozen. 1.Too many people have no
bad mouth odour; they only believe they have it--and that is a
psychological problem. If you smelt such folks' breaths, you find nothing,
yet they insist their mouths are smelling. The dentist or doctor should
refer such cases to the psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
2.Garlic and Onions; Tobacco and other foods, herbs, alcohol and such
stuff should be not be forgotten.3.Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis or
what is referred to as sore-throat-- some times stones 4.Liver diseases such as
cirrhosis or liver failure 5. Kidney Diseases 6.Blood Diseases 7.Diseases
of the Gall bladder 8.Menstruation 9.Sinus diseases such as sinusitis 10.
Chronic Indigestion 11.Lung diseases such as lung abscess 12. Diabetes
13.Cancers
Of course these are medical causes. Dental causes must also not be
forgotten but investigated by the dentist. Disease of the gum--
(periodontal); dental abscess, cancer of the mouth; the overgrowth
of certain anaerobic bacteria, dry mouth caused by the use of certain
drugs, allergies, and so on and so forth. To tackle this condition,
see both a dentist and a doctor--not just a dentist alone. The psych--
iatrist/ clinical psychologist should also not be forgotten.
Cheers
