Clarify Contraceptives

Please Doctor,
I am a regular of yours and I must, first of all thank you very profusely for your keen, lucid and most informative way of answering people's questions in your column. Please keep it up. About last week's question and answer and one you did before on discharges, I have some very confusing questions for u. Doctor, the 5 discharges you spoke about, do they follow each other -- as in the blood, water, dry, pap, okro like discharge? Also, when can one have a baby boy and when a baby girl? Lastly did you say the doctor or the laboratory will do the HVS(High Vaginal Swab) test on a woman?
Please doctor i need this to be as confidential as always. I also want u to please prescribe pregnancy prevention drugs for me. but you have not. There are people that their period are not regular that is why I need this in order to avoid pregnancy.
Thank you doctor for your past replies, looking forward to more from you. You are the best.
Gladys Coshdawea, Jos, Plateau

Dear Gladys,
The hormones that control menstrual cycle phases also act on the glands of the cervix that produce mucus secretions. The mucus secreted by the cervix collects on the cervix and in the vagina. It changes in quality and quantity just before and during ovulation. With proper personal instruction, many women can learn to recognize the changing characteristics. Instruction in the cervical mucus method is usually given on a one-to-one basis. The cervical mucus method is also known as the ovulation method or the Billings method which depends on a sequential pattern
The cycle begins with menstruation. During vaginal bleeding, the flow disguises the mucus signs.
The menstrual period is usually followed by a few days when no mucus is present - these are "dry days."
As an egg starts to ripen, mucus increases in the vagina and appears at the vaginal opening. It is generally yellow or white, and it is cloudy and sticky, or tacky.
The greatest amount of cervical mucus usually occurs immediately before ovulation during the "slippery days." The mucus takes on a clear and slippery quality that resembles raw egg whites. When the mucus can be stretched between the fingers, it is called spinnbarkeit - German for stretchable. This is the peak period of fertility.
About four days after the slippery days begin, mucus may abruptly become cloudy and tacky, reduce sharply in volume, and a few dry days may return before your period starts.
Listen dear --- it is not true that you need any other thing to prevent pregnancy.
Of 100 couples who use the cervical mucus method for one year with perfect use, only three women will become pregnant; so note these ten points following and never be confused again about when you as a woman can get pregnant or not.
Every woman needs to know this so as to be able, by her very self --all by her self all alone, to control her fertility
1. All women menstruate for about 5 days in 28/30
2.During this period blood comes out of the woman's vagina.
3. During other days, not blood, but some other stuff come out of the vagina.Normal vaginal discharge is white or off-white, not itchy and not smelly.
4. These stuff or discharge are of 4 types-- and resemble 4 common substances.
5. The first is dry --nothing. Then water-- not sticky, just plain wet. Then pap --ogi or akamu--the cold type.
6. Finally there is the okro-like discharge that women have come out of their vaginas sometime during their monthly-- 28 day or 30 day or whatever the length of the cycle;okay?
7. So we have, blood; dry; wet like water, wet like ogi or akamu and wet like okro. To recap we have 4/5 discharges that women have during their monthly cycles. Blood; dry; water; pap; okro. The pap and okro constitute what is called ovulation mucus. It is the time when the woman's egg is around and she can get pregnant by the sperm fertilizing it if she has sex.
8.You can and should check which discharge you are having whenever you go to the loo everyday. Just like you use tissue paper to wipe your mouth, use same(tissue) to wipe your vulva(shows) and note as well as mentally record what discharge you're having for that day.Check it to make sure--each time you visit the ladies' that day.
9. To get pregnant, have sex when the discharge is plentiful, drawy and slippery like okro.
10.To avoid preganancy have sex at the time you are having any other discharge--except the okro -- and --- to be doubly sure -- the pap-like times. Follow this guide and you can't miss it. Contraceptives? One of the very best is the plain, good old condom; okay? --and remember that in these days of HIV/ AIDS, you are not allowed to forget it. POSTINOR is the name of a very useful oral contraceptive; unique in that it is made for the special need of the lady who has suffered rape or who did not use the normal daily oral contraceptives or did not check her signs or --as very often happens with sex, could not control events. Can be easily bought from the chemists and will, correctly used up till 72 hours after sex, prevent pregnancy; although the earlier after sex it is used, the better. Baby boy? Have sex on the very day of ovulation -- that is the last day of the okro. On that day also, you will notice a sharp pain on one or both of your sides, coinciding with your release of an egg. Sex before or after that day, you'll likely get a girl. HVS? The doctor will take the specimen from inside the woman's vagina and then send the specimen to the laboratory where the lab.scientist will work on (test) the specimen --not the woman or her vagina please-- and then issue a report.
