Dear Dr,
Can you please help me verify-- is it true that there are medicines available now that can help treat hypertension without the side-effect of loss of sexual acuity? I am even told that the same drugs can increase libido. Is this true? And what drugs are these?

One of the most challenging problems in the care of patients with high blood pressure is patient noncompliance with antihypertensive therapy -- that is, for various reasons, patients do not take their drugs the way they should. One reason is that men on older high blood pressure medications (diuretics, beta-blockers) complain of severe erectile dysfunction. But as if to counter this common complaint, there is now, in truth, a new class of drugs to treat hypertension, that actually boost libido and research has shown for these drugs the highest rate of persistence in the use of the medicines.

These drugs are found to be very well tolerated and are not associated with the side-effects known to cause compliance problems with beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers such as impotence, dry cough and peripheral edema.The drugs reverse sexual dysfunction - significantly improving the sex lives of men who suffer from sexual dysfunction-- but not only men they actually improve sexual function in men and women with hypertension.

By blocking the action of angiotensin, valsartan dilates blood vessels and reduces blood pressure.[1] In the U.S., valsartan is indicated for treatment of high blood pressure, congestive heart failure (CHF), or post-myocardial infarction (MI).In 2005, Diovan was prescribed more than 12 million times in the United States and global sales were approximately $6.0 billion.

In the US, valsartan is marketed by Novartis under the trade name Diovan. In Pakistan, it is marketed by Efroze under the trade name Angiotan. In India, it is marketed by Cipla under the trade name Valtan and by Torrent Pharmaceuticals under the trade name Valzaar. In Egypt it is marketed by Novartis under the name of Tareg.
