Stroke and Witchcraft?

Dear Doctor,
My brother sufferered a stroke about a year ago. He was flown abroad and later sent back home. He has been geting better but only slightly and a bit too slow for my liking. He is no longer in the hospital because we have been made to realise that what he needs now is some physiotherapy and so on. But I am not satisfied. He can hardly talk or recognise any body. I am worried - some of our relatives are sure there is witchcraft involved and, as if they are right, certain people at home, i am told, have in fact, already confessed their involvement. Doctor, what can i do? What do you think about the witchcraft angle? What can I do to help? I don't want to lose him! Please help. Thank you
Mrs Mata Humuani, Epe, Lagos

Dear Mrs Humuani,
Stroke is defined as "a sudden loss of brain function caused by a blockage or rupture of a blood vessel to the brain, characterized by loss of muscular control, reduction or loss of sensation or consciousness, dizziness, slurred speech, or other symptoms that vary with the extent and severity of the damage to the brain. Also called cerebral accident, cerebrovascular accident and apoplexy, stroke involves a sudden loss of consciousness resulting when the rupture or occlusion of a blood vessel leads to oxygen lack in the brain. Hypertension is usually the disease behind a stroke. It increases the pressure --or force of flow-- of the the blood vessels to the brain are carrying beyond the point of endurance and the poor vessels burst --rather like when the water pipe from water corporation bursts at some point before it gets to your house! Then you will suffer a "no water" situation-- just like the brain suffers a no oxygen situation causing brain cells to die. And since nerve cells do not regenerate when they die, rehabilitation will have to take long -- the function of dead nerve cells will need to be taken over and learnt slowly (by dint of repetition and practice) by other nerve cells unaccoustomed to those functions. When there is a blockage of blood vessel rather than a bursted blood vessel at the root of stroke however, then we have -- not hypertension -- but something else as the underlying disease condition causing the stroke. A good example is when there is a Road traffic accident and some long bones are broken-- maybe the thigh bone or femur. Here the displaced bone marrow fat from the broken bone may travel through blood vessels as an embolus to go and block vessels in the brain and cause a stroke. Emboli may also form from the cholesterol plaques found in the inside walls of old and ageing artherosclerotic blood vessels --again dislogdging and travelling to block smaller blood vesels in the brain to cause stroke. This is why a high cholesterol level and artherosclerosis are dangerous. The care of a stroke patient involves making sure they are receiving as and when due their medications against hypertension (commonest cause in these parts) and or whaever else may be the root of their stroke, because if care is not taken the high blood pressure will soon cause another stroke in a patient that has just been diagnosed of the same!!! Psychologically, there must be committed, caring , supportive, non- complaining ansd anticipatory care best given from loving members of the family. You see, a person with stroke is either paretic or paralysed --(very weak or totally non-functioning muscles) and cannot move by themselves to some or every degree and may not even be able to help themselves to toilet. So as not to demoralise them and thereby make them prone to further deterioration, the care and support must be of high quality and committed -- it takes very little carelessness for a paralysed patient to develop a bed sore -- deadly in its effect - and usual when nursing care is deficient -- a paralysed patient's position must be changed at least every 2 hours!! Spiritually, you will find that prayers will help --seriously. You can't pray? Well psalms are ready -made prayers and work if prayed conscientiously. Witchcraft? Confessions? Hmmh. Let's just say that it is true that many diseases disabilities, discomforts, diasasters and depressing adversities are negatively spiritually engineered by agents of darkness. If you read my book,"Destroying the Strongholds of Witchcraft" you will learn much in its 333 pages that will be useful to your brother and your prayers. Call the helplines or send e mail to find out how to obtain the book.
Cheers

Belly Pains At Night

Dear Dr Bibbi,
I am a regular reader of the Tuesday edition of the Sun newspaper. Of all the columns, yours is my best. This is so because I have learnt and share with people their experiences and problems. May God continue to grant you wisdom. Doctor, my problem is about pains which I experience at the left side of the abdomen. These pains started about two years ago; when I was a member of the Karate club. I thought it was because of stomach exercise until the pain persisted even when I stopped the exercise. These pains mostly occur at night. Please, doctor what do you think is the cause? What test should I perform-- X-rays; scan etc? I really need your help. Your reply could be by e-mail or on my favorite column on Tuesday. Thanks for your help.
Yours Sincerely,
EKK, Enugu

Dear EKK,
What you describe sounds very uncomfortably like Peptic Ulcer of the stomach and must be seen as such by your doctor until proven otherwise. Peptic ulcer causes pain in the belly in the region you described; although the pain could also be located in the upper middle belly; lower chest; right upper belly; middle belly around the navel or just all over. Secondly, the pains are worse in the night or when the stomach is empty--that is when you have not eaten in a long time. The doctor would like to do tests like a special X ray called Barium Enema as well as a gastroscopy to prove that you really have an ulcer. He might also need to do Occult Blood tests on your stool. Apart from ulcer, pancreatitis, a gall bladder inflammation or cholecystitis, hepatitis and pneumonia may cause similar symptoms.
Cheers

Brain Fag Syndrome

Brain Fag Syndrome
Dear Doctor,
Thanks for spreading the wisdom of healthy living to we ignorant of the essence. I really appreciate your humane contribution to betterment to our society in term of healthy living. May good lord continue to reward you generously. Sir, I have persistent problem of battling fatigue on daily basis. Been a bookish individual, I have long developed the habit turn addict of reading on a daily basis. Early this year I started experiencing a slight ache sparking intermittently on the far right temple of my head. Despite my 8 to 9 hours of night sleep, the symptom has now turned to a full-blown fatigue. The continuing buzzing has commenced traveling vigorously through even the once safe regions of my head, thereby causing intense discomfort. Normally, I do up to 4 to 5 hours of reading at a go. But now I can’t even clock 2hours. I’ve gone on a personal diagnose of swallowing sleeping pills to help ease the persistent throbbing and drumming in my head. Please help doc, I can’t stand this any longer. My head is now like a beehive jam-packed with million buzzing bees. Your avid reader,
Lawry Jones; Ijeshatedo, Lagos
Dear Lawry Jones,
You have what is known as the brain fag syndrome, meaning your brain is fatigued or tired from so much effort to study and succeed. Here is a bit of research on brain--fag : "has been shown to occur very widely in African students in western educational systems south of the Sahara. But in this case, the fag is primarily experienced by stressed-out students in Nigeria and other parts of Africa--a reaction, it is said, to the alien pressures of Western-style book learning. Symptoms include difficulties in concentrating, remembering, and thinking, as well as burning or crawling sensations under the skin and visual disturbances. Studiation madness is a term used in Trinidad for a similar syndrome./Ethiopians refer to the brain-fag syndrome as "overworking of the head" due to the strain of studying. Prince, who first described the syndrome in Nigerian students and characterized its symptoms, emphasized that it stems from a cultural clash between African and Western civilizations./brain fag or brain fog: (West Africa) a condition experience by high school or university students. Symptoms include difficulties in concentrating, remembering, and thinking. Students often state that their brains are "fatigued". Additional symptoms center around the head and neck and include pain, pressure, tightness, blurring of vision, heat, or burning."
You see, about 1960, a certain professor of psychiatry working incidentally in Nigeria here ( Ibadan, I believe) by the name of Prince, described this syndrome and it has been widely accepted all over the world although there is still a considerable amount of skepticism on the part of other psychiatrists who feel that it is just a mere anxiety neurosis or depressive neurosis. The controversy is not strange and in fact has a very interesting aspect to it in that my Ife University Professor of Psychiatry; Olufemi Morakinyo believes in the brain fag syndrome and has written widely on it, while his equally Nigerian colleague working from Canada (formerly of Ibadan); Professor R. Olukayode Jegede feels there is nothing special about brain fag. The two professors are my close acquaintances!!! You see the key to understanding both the professors and the disease is the word "syndrome". Whenever doctors or medical scientists use that word for a disease the full meaning is that they do not totally understand the disease they are trying to describe. One scientist/doctor may see it this way, another sees it differently. Which is not strange either-- it has taken time to fully elucidate the natural history of most diseases that we fully understand today. What with South African President Thabo Mbeki actually claiming -- with some scientists (who are now being proved wrong) that AIDS is not caused by HIV and so on!!! Why? Well AIDS is a syndrome-- half understood -- even till now--although we're getting there gradually. So, what is my advice to you? Well, see a good doctor/ psychiatrist. Also, see your pastor/priest. Being a doctor and pastor to boot, if I were to treat you, I would physically thoroughly examine and investigate you to make sure you do not lack any micro-nutrients that could negatively affect the brain and then give you medications/nutrients that would help brain power; psychologically treat you for anxiety neurosis and --yes brain fag-- including full explanations of the disorder and the controversies it has generated while giving you assurance you would be cured; but spiritually, with prayer to God for hidden spiritual roots to your problem -- for if you ask me I would say, simply, that brain fag could very well be spiritually--engineered difficulties and obstacles placed in the way of especially brilliant, ambitious and academically gifted individuals like you to make sure their destinies are thwarted and ruined. By giving treatment at the 3 levels of human existence I would not fail.

Lawry Law, Lagos

Dear Lawry,

Yes, the liver enzymes, SGOT and SGPT are abnormally high in Hepatitis. Liver enzymes help maintain a variety of chemical and metabolic processes that occur in the liver. Normally, very small amounts of these enzymes can be detected in your blood. Common causes of higher-than-normal liver enzymes include:

Infections such as viral hepatitis; Certain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics and anti seizure medications; mononucleosis; exposure to toxins such as alcohol and fumes of some organic solvents; tumors in the liver or bile ducts
Gallstones.Treatment depends on the underlying cause of elevated liver enzymes. An initial step in detecting liver damage is a simple blood test to determine the presence of certain liver enzymes in the blood. Under normal circumstances, these enzymes reside within the cells of the liver. But when the liver is injured, these enzymes are spilled into the blood stream.

Among the most sensitive and widely used of these liver enzymes are the transaminases. They include SGOT and SGPT. These enzymes are normally contained within liver cells. If the liver is injured, the liver cells spill the enzymes into blood, raising the enzyme levels in the blood and signaling the liver damage.

What are the transaminases?

The transaminases catalyze chemical reactions in the cells in which an amino group is transferred from a donor molecule to a recipient molecule. Hence, the names transaminases. SGOT and SGPT are sensitive indicators of liver damage from different types of disease. Continue the prescribed medicines. You will also find the following two herbs very useful in liver disease -- bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) and bitter cola. Use them liberally.

Cheers

How To get Him Well?

How To get Him Well?
Dear Dr. Oluranti
I read with interest your article "Aaron's astrocytoma "and it occurred to me you might be able to help. I am a retired Consultant Dermatologist and my son has been a professional with the media in UK for over eight years. About 6 weeks ago he wrote to me informing me that my grandson (13 year old academically brilliant and musically gifted) is ill and the doctors cannot put a finger to what is going on. See how my grandson described his problem below
To Grandpa,
It's Demide and I'm replying to your email. I'm missing a lot of school, my symptoms are: I have a sore throat, a bad stomach, bad headaches, heart burn from time to time, sore eyes; I always feel tired, a
very bad back and I can't always get to sleep at night. How are you any way? Hope you reply soon. Love From Demide
My son said the doctors consulted so far in London think it is post viral infection symptoms and that with time it will clear off, but instead it is getting worse. I will personally appreciate it if you can direct my son to the proper hospital to take his son to.
Dermatologist Grandpa

Sir,
As a medical professional, I salute your courage in seeking help—always get a second opinion. It can mean the difference between life and death. London is good enough place to get correct medical help. But definitely if the boy is getting worse, we must not rest. A new hospital? I think, better than the hospital it’s a new professional who will use a new approach that you really need. Especially when, as you said, the doctors are good (UK), they cannot really put a finger on a diagnosis, and they are losing the battle – the boy is not wetting well. Personally, I do not waste time—if improvement is expected in 24 hours and I am not getting it, I approach my cases with a different paradigm immediately. What paradigm? Well, you agree man is not just a body, but body, mind and spirit together. So, for the mind, I ask, “Is there a psychological angle to this?” For the spiritual, I ask, “Is there a spiritual root?” Having a high index of suspicion is useful in these cases where you already have access to the best in physical terms but you are getting unsatisfactory results. So I look holistically at the case – any mind-based problems? Anxiety? Conflicts? Stresses? You never know. This is the area referred to as Psycho-Somatic Medicine. After doing a thorough search in this domain, I know that beyond the subconscious is the spiritual or the unconscious. So, I ask-- What is the boy’s sleep pattern like? Any nightmares? What is the content of his dreams? I call this Spiritual Lab. It is real—very real. We then use the knowledge we glean to clear the case and cure the ailment; using the indicated medications all the way(for the body); adding confidence building mentorship and psycho-therapy(for the mind) and prayer which is the basis of all spiritual intervention. If you need a second opinion from us in your case or that of a relative, call the helplines.

ACHING ANUS

ACHING ANUS
Dear Doctor,
Good day sir. I have a kind of ache in my anus. It was not there before.
I just saw it and if I go to excrete I sometimes feel pain. I don't
know what to do. I would be glad to hear from you soon.
Dennis Saggei, Warri, Delta

Dear Dennis,
If you feel this pain principally when you go to stool and you do
not bleed, then we can safely assume that perhaps your stools are
hard--in other words you get constipation and that it is this constipated,
hard stools that are the cause of the aching anus. You must understand that
hard stools are the leading cause of a dozen or so conditions that can
ache your anus; especially if associated with stooling. Other conditions are
a)Cuts in the skin or tissues(we call these fissure-in-ano) of the anus
--again; dry hard stools cause this, leading to b) infection and maybe
c) a boil or d)an abscess. This may end up as d) a "fistula-in-ano" when
the pus from the abscess causes a track in the tissues as it tries to find
it's way out. e) injury to the bum as well as e)Anal sex f)Pile or hemorrhoids
especially when they are clotted and g)infected; h)STD's and proctalgia fugax,a
self limiting condition common among teenagers as well as i)prolapse of the
rectum; common among women who have delivered many babies -- ALL can also cause
aching anus. It is only after you have seen a good doctor and he has listened
to your full description of the problem, cross examined and physically looked you
up can anyone say which of these causes you have. Before you see the doctor,
these half a dozen measures will help you tremendously a)Sit on warm water at
least twice a day --sitz bath it's called b) Drink lots of water--up to 10
glasses a day--2 each on waking and rising and at each meal; c)Eat a good portion
of one of these fruits/vegetables daily so as to get plenty of fibre into your
gut which will automatically soften your stool--pawpaw, pineapple, garden
eggs, water melon, cucumber, apples and golden melon-- d)Go to stool once nature
calls--do not delay until it is unbearable; e)Get lots of exercise; f)-- and I
call this "Dr Oluranti's Technical Knock Out"-- use some Vaseline or other
lubricant on your finger to lubricate your anal canal before you stool and
no matter how hard the stools, they will be easily and greasily slipped out
of your system with great relief

Darker Urine!!

Please Doctor,
I have a problem i would like 2 share with u.over one year now,my urine are not white any more.Sometimes it would be either yellow, brown or lemon in colour.I am, huge in stature but with small penis about 6 inches.I am ashamed of it.Please tell me how to increase it naturally.u are mu last hope or i would commit suicide[God forbid]Please help me sir.
VXS,Lokoja, Kogi State

Dear VXS,
Ordinarily, yellow, dark or red urine would evoke thoughts of about half a dozen things a)Fever, b) Dehydration; c)Drugs d) Jaundice? e)Excess Sweating? f)Bleeding in the urinary tract? Which drugs are you on that can colour your urine yellow? That is a most important but often forgotten cause. Then when you have some fever, no matter how small, the higher temperature means that you lose more water than if you were afebrile(had no fever). More than normal amounts of water escape from your body (through sweating) via the extra heat you are generating. Moreover, the excess heat also makes your metabolic processes to be more active, using up more body water. This same lack of enough water is a cause of yellow urine. Simply do a test called Urinalysis and then drink more water. Or review your use of the drugs you're using; okay?
