Dear Dr,
How do you tell the difference between calmness and
depression?
Qudus Jankpata, Ilorin
Dear Qudus,
In
depression there is disinterestedness, inability
to function effectively and fatigue; all traceable to reduced energy
levels. There is also a definite affectation of the mood-- sadness,
despair, dejection, loss of hope; guilt. On the other hand, a person who is calm does
not necessarily have reduced energy and interest; guilt and
a depression of mood. Depression is like sadness. Other features
may include a loss of appetite; broken sleep, early morning
awakening; constipation. Depression is an illness for which you need
medical attention
best provided by a good doctor/psychiatrist, with effective drugs that
help treat
it. Apart from this light level of depression a person can also have
depression with psychotic features./ I need to explain the word
psychosis --it is another word
for (you guessed it) outright madness!! Causes are unknown. One very
notable complication of depression is suicidal thoughts, suicidal
tendencies and suicidal attempts.Suicide means that a person took his own life by himself. Since suicide can result from severe
depression lets recognize depression for what it is and get it
properly treated, folks. One last thing -- calmness
is best seen after waking up from sleep-- it needs no treatment.Cheers
