What Is Herpes?

WHAT'S HERPES?

Dear Dr. Bibbi,

I am an ardent reader of your health column (You and your Health) in The Daily Sun. I have learnt a lot and shared with people their experiences and problems, but I have some pressing questions to ask and I know you are the right person to talk to.

1. WHAT IS HERPES SIMPLEX
2. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OR SIGNS?
3. WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CURES AND DRUGS TO USE?thn
4. WHAT KIND OF TESTS IS REQUIRED

YNA, Port Harcourt.

Dear YNA,

1.Herpes Simplex is an STD. There are 4 major features. 2.a)Blisters will form on the genitals. They will go of their own accord-- whether you treat or not. b)They will recur -- in fact, keep recurring for life. c)They will burn, pepper, or itch the sufferer. d)Vaginal herpes can blinden a baby born the normal way; so a mother with herpes will need to be encouraged to do Caesarean Section. 3.There is no known cure-- only palliative treatment. 4.Tests to diagnose the disease are not practical--as in costs and availability; so doctor usually diagnoses from the clinical features alone. Herpes is a very common STD that sufferers just keep quiet about. Also, I imagine a lot of quacks will easily call it Staphylococcus. Though there are no cures, there are certain medications that if taken, will make the recurrences happen less frequently.Herpes is a virus. There are two types Herpes Hominis Type 1 and Herpes Hominis Type 2. Type 2 causes the STD. Type 1 causes the mild fever or cold blister around the mouth that we all know about and is harmless.

Cheers

The DASH Diet

Dear Dr,
What is the DASH Diet and why is it so important?
Jimi Sho, Abeokuta

Dear Jimi,
Let me allow Dr.Gabe Mirkin -he has been here before-- to answer this question. Here goes--

DASH (High-Plant) Diet for Heart Health, Weight Loss and Diabetes Prevention/Control

Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Reports from Harvard School of Public Health shows that a diet rich in plants lowers high blood pressure (1,2). It's called the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.) Other studies show that similar eating patterns lower cholesterol, help to control diabetes and cause weight loss in people who are overweight.

It took only two weeks for the diet to have an effect and after eight weeks, 70 percent of those eating the DASH diet had normal blood pressures, compared to 45 percent on the fruits-and-vegetables diet and 23 percent on the control diet. The authors feel that increasing minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium lowers high blood pressure perhaps by suppressing calcium regulating hormones that close blood vessels. The diet appears to act the same way as the diuretics that are the most common drugs prescribed to control blood pressure: it gets rid of excess sodium (1a).

Most people will not have their high blood pressure lowered just by restricting salt. These studies show that a diet to lower high blood pressure should be rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, contain beans, seeds, nuts and low-fat dairy products, and limit everything else. Here's a day on the DASH diet:

8 servings of grains
5 servings of vegetables
5 servings of fruit
2-3 servings of skim or low-fat milk, yogurt or cheese
5 servings per week of nuts, seeds or beans
1-2 servings of meat, poultry or fish
restrict sweets and fats

You should immediately notice that this is basically the diet that I have recommended for more than 30 years. Here's my modified DASH diet for total heart health: to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, control weight, and prevent or control diabetes.

About 8 servings of WHOLE grains (not flour)
At least 5 vegetables
At least 5 fruits
Up to 3 fat free dairy products (optional)
Up to 2 servings of seafood (I recommend that you avoid meat from mammals)
Beans or legumes (no limit)
1-2 tablespoons nuts or snack seeds
Up to 3 teaspoons olive oil (optional)
Minimal added sugars (none if diabetic or trying to lose weight)
MOST IMPORTANT-Exercise!

Note: Serving sizes are typically 1/2 cup of cooked foods, 1 cup of raw fruits or vegetables.

To see if you are among the eighty percent of people who can control blood pressure with this diet, try my SHOW ME! diet for just two weeks. You (and your doctor) will be amazed.

To Get My Wife Pregnant

Good Day Dr,

I have some issues I would like to ask you about. First, I must commend you for the wonderful works you are doing and solving millions of family and health problems for us.

My wife is not pregnant and has not been for once but when she press her breast hard milk will be coming out, is this an infection or a hormonal imbalance ?

Secondly, when I have sexual arousing feelings, i will discover some sticky or slippery watery substance coming out of my penis, is this normal or abnormal ?

Is stomach noise normal or an infection.

Thank you so much.

Dear Abiram,
I'm afraid your wife will not get pregnant in a hurry if you do not understand the following 3 points and quickly take appropriate action.

1.Milk from the breast is HORMONAL IMBALANCE
Specifically, the hormone called "Prolactin" -- responsible for a woman to breastfeed --and you know that a breastfeeding woman (taking care of a baby right now) is definitely not asking for another a baby -- this hormone is too high in such women; causing them to be barren or infertile or sub fertile -- meaning -- they do not want another baby at this point in time -- since --- ostensibly -- they are supposedly breastfeeding another baby right now.

2.The sticky stuff from your penis at arousal is prostatic fluid --its normal, yes but tends to be more in volume and thus more noticeable when there is an infection of the prostate. Infection of the prostate is referred to as Chronic Prostatitis CPR --and one of the complications is Low or Zero sperm count -- meaning infertility; subfertility or barrenness for the man

3.One of the more remote and uncommonly identified symptoms of CPR is a rumbling noisy abdomen

What to do?
Call me let's consult.

Get your wife --unless you believe it is not wise-- and together, both of you call me any night you are ready -- even if it is tonight.

I should be able to answer and spend time with you on your case once you understand certain things.

The ball is in your court right now
Play it!!!
